Market Rebels

Great individuals are assumed to cause the success of radical innovations--thus Henry Ford is depicted as the one who established the automobile industry in America. Hayagreeva Rao tells a different story, one that will change the way you think about markets forever. He explains how 'market rebels'--activists who defy authority and convention--are the real force behind the success or failure of radical innovations. Rao shows how automobile enthusiasts were the ones who established the new automobile industry by staging highly publicized reliability races and lobbying governments to enact licensing laws. Ford exploited the popularity of the car by using new mass-production technologies. Rao argues that market rebels also establish new niches and new cultural styles. If it were not for craft brewers who crusaded against 'industrial beer' and proliferated brewpubs, there would be no specialty beers in America. But for nouvelle cuisine activists who broke the stranglehold of Escoffier's classical cuisine in France, there would have been little hybridization and experimentation in modern cooking. Market rebels also thwart radical innovation. Rao demonstrates how consumer activists have faced down chain stores and big box retailers, and how anti-biotechnology activists in Germany penetrated pharmaceutical firms and delayed the commercialization of patents. Read Market Rebels to learn how activists succeed when they construct 'hot causes' that arouse intense emotions, and exploit 'cool mobilization'--unconventional techniques that engage audiences in collective action. You will realize how the hands that move markets are the joined hands of market rebels. Some images inside the book are unavailable due to digital copyright restrictions.

Traditional craft-brewed beer can transform a meal from everyday to extraordinary. It´s an affordable, accessible luxury. Yet most people are only familiar with the mass-market variety. Have you tasted the real thing? In The Brewmaster´s Table, Garrett Oliver, America´s foremost authority on beer and brewmaster of the acclaimed Brooklyn Brewery, reveals why real beer is the perfect partner to any dining experience. He explains how beer is made, relays its fascinating history, and, accompanied by Denny Tillman´s exquisite photographs, conducts an insider´s tour through the amazing range of flavors displayed by distinct styles of beer from around the world. Most important, he shows how real beer, which is far more versatile than wine, intensifies flavors when it´s appropriately paired with foods, creating brilliant matches most people have never imagined: a brightly citric Belgian wheat beer with a goat cheese salad, a sharply aromatic pale ale to complement spicy tacos, an earthy German bock beer to match a porcini risotto, even a fruity framboise to accompany a slice of chocolate truffle cake. Whether you´re a beer aficionado, a passionate cook, or just someone who loves a great dinner, this book will indeed be a revelation.

Hophead Harry Goes to the Brewery

Hophead Harry Goes to the Brewery is a colorful story about a little hop's journey through the brewing process. The title character introduces himself and explains how beer is made-from the field to the glass. To better tell the tale, Harry visits a number of friends who accompany him on his journey to the brewery. Throughout the story, each character describes his or her role in the beer-making process. First, we run into Bobby Barley who shows us how the process begins with grain. Next, Mary Malts arrives on the scene to discuss how she transforms the barley into malt. Once these three have their hops and malt packed up, they head to the brewery where they meet Brewmaster Brooks and Wendy Water. Combining all their resources, along with some brewer's yeast, these five characters brew a craft beer together. After the beer is fermented in tanks, they transfer the beer into kegs before delivering them to the local pub. Although the story is set up as a children's book filled with quirky characters and vivid illustrations, it's as much meant for parents as it is for their children (actually, more so). It's entertaining and educational regardless of age, but it's a story predominantly meant for craft beer enthusiasts to enjoy.

Beeronomics

From prompting a transition from hunter-gatherer to an agrarian lifestyle in ancient Mesopotamia to bankrolling Britain's imperialist conquests, strategic taxation and the regulation of beer has played a pivotal role throughout history. Beeronomics: How Beer Explains the World tells these stories, and many others, whilst also exploring the key innovations that propelled the industrialization and consolidation of the beer market. At the same time when mega-mergers in the brewing industry are creating huge transnationals selling their beer across the globe, the craft beer movement in America and Europe has brought the rich history of ancient brewing techniques to the forefront in recent years. But less talked about is the economic influence of this beverage on the world and the myriad ways it has shaped the course of history. Beeronomics covers world history through the lens of beer, exploring the common role that beer taxation has played throughout and providing context for recognizable brands and consumer trends and tastes. Beeronomics examines key developments that have moved the brewing industry forward. Its most ubiquitous ingredient, hops, was used by the Hanseatic League to establish the export dominance of Hamburg and Bremen in the sixteenth century. During the late nineteenth century, bottom-fermentation led to the spread of industrial lager beer. Industrial innovations in bottling, refrigeration, and TV advertising paved the way for the consolidation and market dominance of major macrobreweries like Anheuser Busch in America and Artois Brewery in Belgium during the twentieth century. We're now in the era of global integration- one multinational AB InBev, claims 46% of all beer profits- but there's a counterrevolution afoot of small, independent craft breweries in both America, Belgium and around the world. Beeronomics surveys these trends, giving context to why you see which brands and styles on shelves at your local supermarket or on tap at the nearby pub.
